Why Undergraduate Scholarships are Rare?

Hi everyone. How are you doing? Recently I have been getting a lot of backlash from the Undergraduate Students. According to them my content is not tailored to them. The Biggest question that I face on an everyday basis is why don’t you post Undergraduate success stories?

Well, I do when there is any.

Scholarship Success Story:

If you are kind enough to go through my content you will see I have talked about at least 4 students coming to Canada this year with a partially funded Scholarship at Undergraduate LevelThree of them are coming to the University of Alberta CSE, EEE, and Statistics department. One is going to Dalhousie University. All four are GPA 5 holders, having above average IELTS. I believe 7.5 and 8. All the students had excellent extracurricular activities. They participate in Math, Physics, Astro Olympiads, Model United Nation, Scout, BNCC. The student going to Alberta Stat is a Semi Professional Badminton Player. The student going to Dalhousie is a Madrasa Student. He knows 2 programming languages, he worked for a Norwegian company remotely and also got admission offers from University of Dhaka and BUET. I mean I have mad respect for them. I did not achieve one tenth of their success at their age. They are all 18/19 years old.

How Scholarships Work?

It’s really important to understand the concept of Scholarship. Scholarship does not mean you study for free. Someone has to teach you, grade your pacers, clean your classroom, maintain your labs, do the admin work for you. Are they doing it for free? They need to get paid. They get paid from the tuition fees that the students pay. Right? You are not paying tuition fees as a scholarship holder of course but someone has to pay your tuition. As a Scholarship aspirant it’s your responsibility to convince someone to pay your tuition fees. The rich kid convince their parents to fund their education. In your case you will convince the University to fund you. How do you do that? Just be great at Academic and Extra-Curricular Activities. Set yourself apart from other students.

Why Should They Fund You?

This is where people miss the logic. NO one will invest thousands of dollars for you out of pity or kindness. You have to prove that you are worth the investment. Universities every year fund a portion of the students because they want to attract top talents. Talented individuals will win competitions, do research, find great jobs, and create big companies. The University ultimately uses their top rated students and alumni to brag about themselves. This is a marketing strategy. Even I do this. I post the Scholarship holders’ success story in my social media so that people will believe I am a great mentor. Lol! Your only job is to be the best at what you do and money will flow. This Dalhousie Student knows 2 programming languages. Do you know three? This Alberta boy is a Semi-Professional Athlete. Are you a Professional National Champion Athlete? If you were better they would fund you instead of them. This is a self interested world. The University will only worry about their reputation just as you are thinking about yourself.

How To Apply:

Usually most universities will not ask you to apply separately for a Scholarship. You will apply normally with all of your awards and achievements. They will choose you if they like your profile.

Why Undergrad Scholarships are Rare? :

Undergraduate Level Education is one of the Biggest sources of Revenue for any North American Universities. They enroll undergrad students. Take their money, use it to provide salary and benefits to the employee, fund research projects. This is a very solid business model. No one is doing Philanthropy. How are they gonna maintain such a massive corporation if students study here for free?

Still some people do get some funding. I already told you. That is for prestige and marketing. Want to get a World Class Education for free? Try Good Quality BD public Universities. I am not saying DU or BUET are the best universities because they have the best curriculum or faculty support. They are the best merely because getting into these institutions are extremely competitive. Unless you are disciplined you can’t get a position here. You will get to know other disciplined hard working people like you. These institutions have strong Alumni. They challenge each other. If you mix with lazy friends you will find it’s ok to be lazy. We only measure our success based on the 5 people closest to us. Be very cautious while choosing friends. We can’t choose our family. If your family is toxic it’s not your fault. If your friends are toxic, that is definitely your fault. Look for people who push you, challenge you and motivate you.

What about Rest of us?

These are some lower cost universities for you. Go through the links and find your desired courses. Usually the STEM, Biology, Business have higher tuition fees. Arts faculty are usually cheaper. Talk to your family and don’t create undue pressure on them. Be responsible. You will get lots of Scholarship and internship opportunities once you come here provided you have a good academic standing. No harm in trying!
